Working with a complex client group, including regional and state agencies, PWP and Perkins + Will master-planned a park for the East Bay end of the new San Francisco Bay Bridge. This project is a key link in the creation of a continuous linear pedestrian and bicycle network to points east and west.

The site includes a former industrial brown field as well as areas under the freeway maze in West Oakland. Gateway Park will commemorate both historic and contemporary industry and industrial infrastructure while also demonstrating the most advanced use of natural systems in green infrastructure and remediation strategies. Allées of trees planted alongside the massive freeway network will serve as a visual marker of the park below, which will include wetland gardens, diverse recreation areas, an education center, and an extensive public-art installation.
